Counselling and psychotherapy are often referred to as talking therapies. How often have you tried to talk through something with a friend or relative only to feel you have not been heard or understood? Or perhaps there are times when it just feels there is no one to talk to, or you don’t feel able to share the issue with those in your life, maybe for fear of worrying them? Counselling, on the other hand, is about being truly listened to, truly heard. It is confidential and is completely about you. And, you will not be judged.
My hope, as a counsellor, is to offer you the space and time where you can explore your life and yourself, who you are and how you are feeling and reacting to your experiences in life. People will often turn to counselling at particular times, perhaps when something has happened which has undermined their sense of who they are, questioned their understanding of the world and what life is about, questioned their values, goals and motivations for life and where they want to be in their life. Someone's death, the break up of a relationship or the loss of employment are but a few. Others will use counselling to assist them in their personal growth and personal awareness, some might call it working toward ‘emotional and cognitive fitness or wellness’.
When life feels like a constant struggle because of coping with issues such as; depression, anxiety, not believing in yourself, difficulties in your relationships with others, including difficulties with your gender identity or problems within your sexual relationship, perhaps an addiction, or compulsion, or a difficult relationship with food or maybe an issue with your body image/size, whatever barrier you might feel is stopping you from experiencing life as you would hope to - counselling can offer a way of discovering how to see those barriers as a challenge that can be overcome rather than impossible to let go of, manage, overcome, move on from.
Counselling is not about offering advice. In fact, a core belief is that the only expert when it comes to you, is, YOU, and that within each of us lies our answers - if we are given the opportunity of reflection, in a professional counselling relationship it is possible to overcome the blocks to those untapped resourses that are in each of us and, by doing so, work towards a life that is experienced as of worth and ourselves of value.
Without a positive and healthy sense of self how can we truly engage in life and achieve our goals? - counselling can facilitate you to find a true sense of self.
